In the early morning hours of February 4, 2020, the life of 18-year-old Antonio Jones, a male known to his family as MadRoxk, was tragically cut short in a wave of violence. He was discovered behind a southwest Atlanta apartment complex on Stanton Road after a bystander flagged down officers who were in the area investigating a report of gunshots around 4:30 a.m.
Jones had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation that followed painted a picture of a chaotic and indiscriminate drive-by shooting. A witness reported seeing a vehicle drive through the complex while an occupant, or occupants, opened fire. Evidence of the intense gunfire was scattered across the parking lot in the form of 30 to 35 shell casings, believed to be from a semi-automatic weapon. The apartment buildings themselves bore the scars of the attack, with damage from several rounds of gunfire. According to his sister, Jones was simply an innocent bystander, walking to the store, who tragically never returned. Investigators at the time did not specify whether they believed he was the intended target or if he lived at the apartment complex.
In the wake of the shooting, the Atlanta Police Department began a search for any additional witnesses and potential suspects. They released information about a vehicle of interest, a silver 2014 to 2018 Chevrolet Silverado. The truck was distinctive, with reported damage to the rear driver-side fender and a missing gas cap. Despite the public appeal for information and the ongoing investigation, no suspects were immediately identified, and no arrests have been publicly announced in connection with the murder of Antonio Jones. His death was one of several homicides in Atlanta in the early part of that year, leaving a family to mourn and a community searching for answers.
