In the early hours of Labor Day weekend in 2023, Harrison Olvey, a 25-year-old male, was working as a valet in the bustling Buckhead neighborhood of Atlanta. A recent graduate of Kennesaw State University with a degree in finance, he was on the cusp of starting a new career. That night, while on duty at a parking garage near the Tongue & Groove nightclub on Piedmont Road, he noticed someone breaking into a truck he knew belonged to an acquaintance.
Olvey decided to intervene, a choice that would tragically end his life.
When Olvey confronted the man, later identified as Randy King, the encounter quickly turned fatal. King, without hesitation, shot Olvey in the chest at close range and fled the scene. The young valet was rushed to Grady Hospital, but his injuries were too severe, and he succumbed to the gunshot wound. The sudden and violent death of the well-liked young man, described by his mother as her 'sweet boy,' sent shockwaves through his community.
Atlanta Police launched an investigation, identifying Randy King as the primary suspect and placing him on their most-wanted list. A little over a month after the shooting, in mid-October 2023, King was taken into custody. The arrest brought a small measure of relief to Olvey's grieving family. King was subsequently indicted in December 2023 on a host of charges, including malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
The trial commenced in February 2026. Prosecutors presented evidence, including surveillance footage of the confrontation, and argued that King acted alone in the senseless killing. The defense contended that while King was present, he was not the one who fired the fatal shot, pointing to Olvey's initial statement where he mentioned seeing 'two Black dudes.' However, the jury was not swayed. After deliberating for just a few hours, they found Randy King guilty on all counts. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus an additional 20 years, ensuring he would spend the rest of his life behind bars for the murder of Harrison Olvey.
