In the summer of 2020, the life of 80-year-old Clarence Knox, a male resident of Atlanta, Georgia, was tragically cut short in a hail of gunfire at his own home. On the night of Thursday, June 25th, his residence on Meadow Park Drive SW became the target of a drive-by shooting. The following morning, on June 26th, police were called to the home for a welfare check around 4 a.m. and discovered a grim scene. Both the house and a car parked outside were riddled with bullet holes.
Inside, they found Mr. Knox, who had been fatally wounded.
Investigators at the scene recovered at least 20 shell casings, a testament to the intensity of the assault. It was soon revealed that this was not the first time the home had been targeted. Just two weeks prior, the house was struck by three bullets in a similar incident. His daughter, Rochelle Thibodeaux, recalled her father mentioning that had he been on the couch during that first shooting, he would have been killed. Despite the pleas of his family to move, Mr. Knox was resolute in staying in the home he had paid for and felt he should be safe in.
The prevailing theory among both the family and police is that Clarence Knox was not the intended victim. It is believed that the assailants were sending a message to a younger family member whom Mr. Knox had allowed to live with him. This relative had not been at the house for about a month leading up to the fatal shooting. The senseless act of violence took the life of a man described by his family as active and beloved, someone who was always willing to help others and enjoyed working on his cars. He had worked as a mechanic for the same transmission business for over five decades.
