In a tragic turn of events stemming from a domestic dispute, a Lawrenceville man lost his life. On a late Thursday night in March 2020, police were called to the Fairway View apartments in Duluth. There, they discovered 30-year-old Derek Whiteside and a 33-year-old woman, Evelyn Chairse, both suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of first responders, Whiteside was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the double shooting quickly pointed to a suspect,
32-year-old Voneric Hill of Lawrenceville. It is believed that the shooting was the culmination of a dispute between family members. Following the incident, Hill was taken into custody after receiving treatment for non-life-threatening injuries. He was subsequently booked into the Gwinnett County jail.
In connection with the death of Derek Whiteside, Voneric Hill has been charged with one count of felony murder and two counts of aggravated assault. The second aggravated assault charge is for the injuries sustained by Evelyn Chairse, who was transported to a local hospital in critical condition following the shooting.
