In the quiet residential area of unincorporated Norcross, Georgia, the afternoon of April 6, 2020, was shattered by the sound of gunfire. Responding to multiple 911 calls shortly before 5 p.m., Gwinnett County police officers arrived at the intersection of Goodwood Boulevard and Pirkle Road to a grim discovery. There, lying by the roadside, was 27-year-old Shane Lee Meyerhoffer, a male from Hayes, North Carolina. He had sustained at least one gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators began the arduous task of piecing together the events that led to Meyerhoffer's untimely death. For nearly a month, detectives canvassed the neighborhood, seeking witnesses and any information that could shed light on a motive and identify those responsible. Their persistence paid off as the investigation began to point towards a drug-related incident that had escalated into deadly violence.
Nearly one month after the shooting, a significant breakthrough occurred in the case. On May 5, 2020, Gwinnett County police announced they had secured warrants for 28-year-old Stefan Weidenbener of Hoschton. At the time the warrants were issued, Weidenbener was already incarcerated at the Gwinnett County Jail on unrelated charges. He was subsequently served with new warrants for felony murder, aggravated assault, the sale of methamphetamine, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in connection with Meyerhoffer's death. Investigators confirmed that the shooting was drug-related.
