Melanie Juliet Powers, a 37-year-old Black woman, was killed in Macon, Georgia, on April 26, 2020, in a case that unfolded inside the home on Radio Drive where she had been living with her young son and was nearing the birth of another child. Early that morning, deputies were called to the house and found Powers in bed with a gunshot wound to the head. Her 11-year-old son had run for help after, according to investigators, he was attacked in the home before escaping to alert neighbors.
Reporting at the time described Powers as heavily pregnant, with local officials and later court coverage making clear that her unborn child also died as a result of the shooting. Friends who spoke afterward remembered her as excited about the baby and trying to build a future, which made the violence inside what should have been an ordinary home feel even more devastating.
Authorities quickly identified a suspect: Passion Latrice Watkins, Powers' stepdaughter. The Bibb County Sheriff's Office said Watkins was found later that day sitting in a park on Pansy Avenue, taken in for questioning, and then charged in the case. Early reports said Watkins had assaulted Powers' son before the shooting, and investigators alleged that she then used Powers' handgun to kill her. The arrest came the same day as the homicide, and the initial charges were malice murder, aggravated assault, cruelty to children, and feticide. As the case moved forward, a grand jury indictment expanded the prosecution's case, with later reporting saying Watkins faced seven charges, including malice murder, felony murder, and feticide. The picture that emerged from court coverage was of a deeply fractured family situation: prosecutors said Powers had been in an on-again, off-again relationship with Laurence Watkins, who was identified as the father of her unborn child and the father of the defendant.
The case did not end with an unsolved question or a missing suspect. In May 2023, Passion Watkins pleaded guilty in Bibb County to the murders of Melanie Powers and her unborn child. Coverage of the plea hearing said the killing happened in the early morning hours after Watkins had returned home from celebrating her 19th birthday the night before. Prosecutors described how Powers and her son had gone to sleep, and how Watkins later entered the bedroom and shot Powers in the head. Reports on the plea said Watkins was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole, plus an additional 10 years. By then, the case had come to be remembered not only as the killing of a pregnant mother, but as one of the more haunting homicides in Macon that year because a child survived the attack, ran for help, and lived with the aftermath of what happened in that bedroom on Radio Drive.
