In the late hours of a Friday evening, on June 5, 2020, the life of 40-year-old Samuel Devoit London was tragically cut short in Columbus, Georgia. The male victim was at the Foxy Lady Lounge on Victory Drive when he encountered a group of teenagers allegedly breaking into cars in the parking lot.
As London exited the lounge, he discovered one of the teens, 14-year-old Raymond Richmond, inside his vehicle. An altercation ensued as London pulled the young man from the car.
The struggle quickly escalated, and during the physical confrontation, a handgun that Richmond had brought with him discharged, striking London. After the shot was fired, Richmond fled the scene, leaving London mortally wounded. The entire incident was described as a very brief and rapid altercation.
Raymond Richmond and four other older teenagers were subsequently arrested and charged with murder in connection with Samuel London's death. The group was described as being involved in a car theft operation. In the nearly three years that followed, the legal process unfolded for Richmond. Initially facing a mandatory life sentence under the murder charge, he was offered a plea deal in March 2023 that would have seen him plead guilty to voluntary manslaughter with a 20-year prison sentence. He rejected this offer and in a surprising move, fired his public defender in open court.
However, a few months later, in May 2023, then 17-year-old Raymond Richmond reversed his decision and pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter, entering an automobile, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. While it was unclear if he intentionally fired the weapon, he accepted responsibility for his role in the events of that fatal night. He was sentenced to serve 30 years, with 22 of those to be spent in prison. At the time of Richmond's plea, the other four co-defendants had not yet entered any pleas in the case.
