Gunfire shattered a spring afternoon in Columbus, Georgia, on May 6, 2025. Around 5:30 p.m. in the 1000 block of Vineville Street, officers responded to a shooting and found 17-year-old David Escobar suffering from a critical gunshot wound. Emergency medical personnel attempted to resuscitate the teenager at the scene, but their efforts were unsuccessful. David, a Hispanic male, was pronounced dead at 6:13 p.m.

The shooting sent shockwaves through the neighborhood, where residents expressed their heartbreak over the loss of a young life. Many felt that gun violence had become far too common in their area. One neighbor, Maria Alvarez, who lived a few houses down, recalled hearing the shots from her porch. “I didn’t expect to see this kind of tragedy on our street,” she said. “He was just a kid.”
The Columbus Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit immediately took the lead on the homicide investigation. Shortly after the shooting, authorities announced that two individuals were in custody in connection with the incident. Investigators worked the case for more than two months before a significant development was made public.
On Monday, July 21, 2025, the Columbus Police Department's Fugitive Unit, with assistance from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, arrested 18-year-old Madison Bunch in Harris County. She was charged with Murder and Burglary in connection with David Escobar’s death. Bunch appeared in Recorder's Court for a preliminary hearing on Thursday, July 24, 2025.
