In the summer of 2020, the life of 30-year-old Brandon McCray was cut short by a single gunshot wound in his Statesboro, Georgia, residence. On the morning of June 5th, police were dispatched to a home on Bea Dot Way following a report of a man shot. Inside, they discovered McCray deceased. The investigation into his death quickly focused on his live-in girlfriend, 25-year-old Ashlynn Zipporah Griffin.
After several hours of investigation and consultation with the Ogeechee Judicial
Circuit District Attorney's Office, authorities arrested Griffin, charging her with McCray's murder. She was taken into custody on the same day as the shooting and booked into the Bulloch County Jail. The incident was characterized by law enforcement as stemming from domestic disputes.
The narrative that unfolded revealed a tumultuous relationship with a history of domestic violence. Griffin maintained from the beginning that she acted in self-defense during an altercation on the day of the shooting, citing a past of abusive incidents. Her family members supported this claim, stating they had begged her to leave McCray. The case was further complicated by the fact that the same District Attorney's office had previously prosecuted McCray for a violent assault on Griffin in 2018 while she was pregnant.
Griffin's case went to trial, where the complexities of her relationship with McCray were laid bare. The prosecution argued against her self-defense claim, while her defense attorney painted a picture of a woman pushed to her limit in a cycle of abuse. Ultimately, a jury found Griffin not guilty of felony murder but guilty of aggravated assault.
