In the fall of 2020, a young man's life was cut short in Atlanta, Georgia. Nineteen-year-old DeVontay DeMario Barnwell, a male, died on October 4, 2020, following a shooting at a convenience store. The incident, which left five other people injured, unfolded at the Star Discount Store on Joseph E. Boone Boulevard.
The tragic event began with an argument between two women inside the store.
Shortly after the initial dispute, a vehicle arrived, and three individuals entered the store and opened fire. Gunfire was then exchanged between those who entered and people already inside the establishment. When the violence subsided, six people had been shot. DeVontay Barnwell was one of the victims and was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
In the days following the shooting, investigators identified two men as suspects. Joshua Jones and Curtis Coffey were subsequently arrested and faced charges related to the incident. Jones was charged with murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Coffey was charged with murder and two counts of aggravated assault, as well as possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
