In the early morning hours of December 4, 2020, the body of 46-year-old Matthew William Loyd, a male, was discovered on a street in southwest Atlanta. He had been shot multiple times. Atlanta Police Department homicide investigators responded to the scene on Kimberly Way S.W. to begin the process of unraveling the circumstances that led to his death.
Just days before his violent end, Loyd was a passenger in a vehicle that led law enforcement on a dramatic, 75-mile chase that crossed
through multiple counties in Alabama. The pursuit began after an attempted burglary at an auto auction in Hueytown, a suburb of Birmingham. During the chase, shots were fired from the vehicle at pursuing officers. The chase concluded when the vehicle was stopped, and the driver, identified as 41-year-old Lazarus Glover of McDonough, was taken into custody. Loyd, however, managed to escape on foot, disappearing into a wooded area after allegedly firing at the officers.
Following the chase, Alabama authorities were in the process of obtaining warrants for Loyd's arrest. He was a wanted man when his body was found in Atlanta. While Lazarus Glover faced a multitude of charges in Alabama, including attempted murder, related to the police chase, his involvement, if any, in Loyd's subsequent death has not been publicly detailed by investigators.
