In the summer of 2014, the life of Jamarius Dionte JP Pennyman, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short in Atlanta, Georgia. In the early morning hours of June 23, Pennyman was in the courtyard of the Providence at Cascade apartment complex on Fairburn Road when he was fatally shot. He was standing among a group of people when a gunman approached and opened fire.
The investigation into the shooting led Atlanta police to identify 20-year-old Steven Blunt as the primary suspect. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and in September 2014, more than two months after the deadly shooting, Blunt surrendered to authorities at the Underground Precinct. He was subsequently taken to the Fulton County Jail and charged with two counts of murder and one count of aggravated assault with intent to murder in connection with the death of Jamarius Pennyman.

The shooting occurred after deputies responded to a report of a man with a gun at a Special Olympics event at New Manchester High School. When deputies contacted Blunt at a nearby residence, he reportedly pulled out a handgun and fired at them. A deputy returned fire, fatally wounding Blunt.
