In what was a tragic case of mistaken identity, Shawn Gray, a 22-year-old male, traveled to the Atlanta area in January 2021 to celebrate his girlfriend's birthday, a trip that would tragically be his last. Unbeknownst to Gray, he had been wrongfully targeted by a man seeking revenge for a crime he had nothing to do with. The father of two had no connection to the events that would lead to his untimely death in the early morning hours of January 17, 2021, outside a hotel in Cobb County.
The chain of events began with a shooting in Chicago that left the nephew of Jamaar Bracey injured. Consumed with a desire for vengeance, Bracey mistakenly identified Shawn Gray as being involved after scouring a Facebook group. Gray was in a relationship with the mother of someone who had previously lived at the residence where the Chicago shooting occurred, a tenuous connection that would prove fatal. After discovering through a social media post that Gray was in the Atlanta area, Bracey began to meticulously stalk him.
Bracey's pursuit was calculated and relentless. He traveled to Gray's hotel on multiple occasions, at one point placing a GPS tracker on his rental car to monitor his every move for 24 hours. He communicated his actions and Gray's location to his sister and a co-defendant, Ashley Davis. In the pre-dawn hours of January 17, Bracey, with Davis acting as the driver, followed Gray back to his hotel. In the hotel parking lot, Bracey ambushed Gray, firing six shots and striking him four times. Gray attempted to flee but succumbed to his injuries on a rocky embankment outside the hotel. His body was discovered later that day by a hotel maintenance worker.
The investigation into Shawn Gray's murder quickly revealed it was a targeted killing. Surveillance footage from the hotel and other evidence led authorities to identify both Bracey and Davis. Davis was arrested a few days after the shooting, and through social media and geolocation data, detectives identified Bracey as the shooter. He was apprehended in North Carolina in February. Following his arrest, a defiant Facebook post by Bracey came to light in which he wrote, 'Hurt me? I'll let karma do its job. Hurt my family? I'll become karma.'
In September 2021, a Cobb County jury found Jamaar Bracey guilty of murder. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus an additional five years. His accomplice, Ashley Davis, entered a plea to felony murder for his role in Shawn Gray's death. The tragic and senseless killing left two children without their father, a life cut short due to a baseless and vengeful act of violence against an innocent man.
