In a Lilburn, Georgia apartment complex on a January afternoon in 2021, the life of Oshane Scott, a 27-year-old Black male, came to a violent and tragic end. The events of that day would later be pieced together by investigators, revealing a story of a meeting that turned deadly.
On January 17, 2021, Scott was at The Aurora @ Twenty Seven Hundred apartments, where he lived. He was with his girlfriend in the parking lot, preparing to leave, when a man named Karre Rivers arrived. Scott and Rivers, who was 25 at the time, went inside Scott's apartment to talk. A short time later, Scott's girlfriend heard the sound of gunfire coming from the apartment. As she ran towards the residence, she saw Rivers hurrying away with his hands in his pockets. Inside, she found Scott suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He died from his injuries shortly after.
Gwinnett County police quickly began an investigation, which they initially believed to be a drug-related homicide. When Karre Rivers was taken into custody, he initially told police a man named 'Bino' was the shooter, claiming he had found Scott already bleeding. However, his story changed under questioning, and he eventually admitted to shooting Scott. Rivers claimed that an argument between the two men escalated into a physical fight, during which he shot Scott.
In March 2024, a Gwinnett County jury found Karre Rivers guilty of malice murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. The trial revealed that Rivers had visited Scott at his apartment on the day of the shooting. After the conviction, a judge sentenced Rivers to life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus an additional five years.
