In the early morning hours of December 12, 2018, the life of 28-year-old Darius Daniels, a Black male, was tragically cut short in a violent encounter at a motel in Lilburn, Georgia. Daniels, who was from the nearby city of Snellville, was visiting a friend at the Homestay Suites located in the 4300 block of Stone Mountain Highway when the fatal incident occurred. Around 4 a.m., a group of four to five masked men, all dressed in black, stormed into the motel room and opened fire. Daniels was struck by the gunfire and succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Authorities with the Gwinnett County Police Department were on the scene within four minutes of the call, where they found Daniels deceased inside the room. The suspects, believed to be armed, fled the location and their whereabouts remain unknown. Investigators began collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses from adjacent rooms. While a definitive motive for the shooting has not been released, authorities have considered the possibility that Daniels was a victim of mistaken identity, bearing a resemblance to the intended target.
The investigation into the murder of Darius Daniels is ongoing, but no arrests have been made in the years following his death. The Gwinnett County Police have continued to appeal to the public for any information that could lead to the identification and apprehension of the suspects. Crime Stoppers has offered a reward of up to $2,000 for information leading to an arrest and indictment in the case. The circumstances of Daniels' death also brought scrutiny upon the Homestay Suites, as it was reported that another shooting had occurred at the same motel just 48 hours prior, raising concerns about the security measures in place at the establishment.
