In the quiet, rural landscape of Montgomery County, Georgia, the life of 20-year-old Zacheriah 'Zach' Douglas Wright of Toombs County was tragically cut short on the evening of Monday, May 17, 2021. A passerby discovered him on RT Lane with a gunshot wound to his torso. Emergency services were called, and he was quickly transported to Meadows Regional Medical Center in Vidalia. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Zach succumbed to his injuries a short time later. An autopsy would later confirm that he died from a single gunshot wound.
The investigation into the young man's death was swift, with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation taking the lead, assisted by the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, the Vidalia Police Department, and the Toombs County Sheriff's Office. Their collective efforts soon pointed to two individuals. On Wednesday, May 19, 2021, the GBI secured arrest warrants for 35-year-old Willie James Rogers of Jacksonville, Florida. At the time the warrants were issued, Rogers was already in custody at the Toombs County Detention Center, having been arrested on unrelated charges by the Vidalia Police Department on the same day of the fatal shooting. The charges against Rogers were severe, including malice murder, felony murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
The investigation did not end with the arrest of Rogers. Authorities indicated that they anticipated further arrests in the case. This proved to be true when, on Friday, May 21, 2021, the U.S. Marshals Service Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force apprehended a second suspect, 35-year-old Ta'Lawrence Terraine Vickers, also known as 'Saga,' of Atlanta. Vickers was taken into custody in Augusta, Georgia. The charges against him mirrored those of his alleged accomplice, with the addition of participation in criminal gang activity. The GBI had secured arrest warrants for Vickers in connection with Zacheriah's murder, alleging his involvement in the violent end to the young man's life. The investigation has continued to be active and ongoing as law enforcement works to bring a full resolution to the case.
