In the late morning of December 12, 2024, the Vidalia Village Apartments on Randolph Drive became the scene of a fatal shooting. First responders were called to the complex around 11:40 a.m. following reports of a man shot in the leg. Upon arrival, Vidalia police officers discovered 31-year-old Timothy Byrd suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was quickly transported by emergency medical services to Memorial Health Meadows Hospital for treatment, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries and died. The shooter was not found at the scene, prompting a thorough investigation by law enforcement.
The Vidalia Police Department, working in conjunction with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, dedicated over two weeks to piecing together the events that led to Timothy Byrd's death. Their investigation identified a single suspect, 27-year-old Ja'meak Rashod Byrd, also of Vidalia. An arrest warrant was issued, and on the final day of the year, December 31, 2024, Ja'meak Byrd was taken into custody without incident. He has since been charged with murder and aggravated assault in connection with the shooting.
Following his arrest, Ja'meak Byrd was booked into the Toombs County Detention Center to await his initial court appearance. While an arrest has been made, authorities have stated that the investigation into the death of Timothy Byrd remains active and ongoing.
