In the early summer evening of Sunday, June 4, 2023, a dispute in Montgomery County, Georgia, set in motion a series of tragic events. Near Jake McCaw Road in the Kibbee area, a confrontation occurred between 23-year-old Mason Andrew McCarty of Vidalia and another man, 27-year-old Hunter Blake Kersey. The altercation escalated, and around 7:20 p.m., a weapon was introduced, and a shot was fired, striking McCarty.
Emergency services were called to the scene, and McCarty was initially taken by ambulance to a nearby field where a medical helicopter was waiting. Complications arose, and he was first transported by ground to Memorial Health Meadows Hospital in Vidalia to be stabilized. He was then airlifted to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Mason McCarty succumbed to his injuries the following day, on Monday, June 5, 2023. A native of Toombs County, McCarty was a mechanic and carpenter who left behind a fiancé, a young son, and a daughter.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in by the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office to lead the inquiry into the shooting. The investigation proceeded, and on June 28, 2023, authorities arrested Hunter Blake Kersey. He was charged with malice murder, felony murder, and aggravated assault in connection with McCarty's death. The initial claim from the shooter was that he had acted in self-defense during the confrontation.
The case against Hunter Kersey went to trial. In February 2026, a Montgomery County jury deliberated on the evidence presented. The trial concluded with the jury returning not guilty verdicts on the charges of malice murder and felony murder. While acquitted of the most serious charges, the matter of sentencing on the aggravated assault charge was still pending. The community was left to grapple with the outcome of a conflict that ended one young man's life and forever altered another's.
