A Fourth of July gathering in Newton County, Georgia, turned into a scene of tragedy, leaving 25-year-old Deondre Fisher, an African American male, dead at the hands of his own brother. The events of that night in 2021 began as a family celebration at their mother's home, a day that should have been filled with joy and camaraderie, but instead spiraled into a fatal confrontation.
The evening had started with Deondre and his older brother, Shaquell Fisher, then 26, enjoying the holiday
festivities. Later, they went to another party with a friend before returning to their mother's residence. It was upon their return that a 'silly nonsense' argument, as their mother would later describe it, began to escalate between the two siblings. The verbal disagreement soon turned into a physical altercation.
In a horrifying turn of events, Shaquell Fisher produced a. 22 caliber handgun and shot his younger brother, Deondre, nine times, emptying the firearm as family members looked on in horror, their pleas to stop going unheard. But the violence didn't end there. Shaquell then went upstairs, retrieved a second weapon, a 9mm handgun, and returned to shoot his brother four more times as he lay wounded and slumped against a wall. A friend who was present managed to call 911 during the unfolding tragedy. The subsequent autopsy would confirm that the final shots were the ones that proved fatal.
Shaquell Fisher was arrested at the scene and charged with the murder of his brother. Though initially granted a bond, it was later revoked due to a violation. After a trial, a Newton County jury found Shaquell Fisher guilty of murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. He is currently in custody awaiting a lengthy prison sentence, a somber end to a dispute that cost one brother his life and the other his freedom.
