In the pre-dawn hours of October 9, 2021, a deep tragedy befell the small town of Alamo, Georgia, with the death of 26-year-old Dylan Mccauley Harrison, a dedicated law enforcement officer. It was his very first shift as a part-time officer with the Alamo Police Department, a role he took on in addition to his full-time position as an agent with the Oconee Drug Task Force.
Harrison, a husband and father to a six-month-old son, was shot and killed in what investigators have described as an ambush-style attack just outside the police station around 1:00 a.m.
The events that culminated in Officer Harrison's death began hours earlier on that Friday night. While on duty, Harrison conducted a traffic stop on a man in the parking lot of a Circle K convenience store, located across the street from the police department. The situation escalated when the man, who was a known associate of the primary suspect, became verbally aggressive and refused to provide identification. When the man pushed the officer, Harrison deployed his Taser and subsequently arrested him, transporting him to the Wheeler County Jail. Investigators believe this arrest was the catalyst for the fatal shooting, viewing it as an act of retaliation.
Following the shooting, a massive manhunt was launched for the suspect, identified as 43-year-old Damien Anthony Ferguson, also known as 'Luke.' The Georgia Bureau of Investigation issued a 'Blue Alert,' a public safety alert used when a law enforcement officer is killed or seriously injured and the suspect is at large. The search concluded the following day, on Sunday, October 10, when Ferguson was apprehended without incident at his home in Alamo by a state SWAT team and the U.S. Marshals Service Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force.
Damien Ferguson was initially charged with the murder of Officer Dylan Harrison and with aggravated stalking related to a separate domestic incident. As the investigation progressed, additional charges were brought against him, including felony murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, aggravated assault on a police officer, and bias-motivated intimidation of first responders. Prosecutors have announced they are seeking the death penalty in the case against Ferguson, who has pleaded not guilty to the charges. The investigation also led to further arrests. Ferguson's sister, 45-year-old Charlotte Ferguson, was charged with hindering the apprehension or punishment of a criminal. Additionally, a 24-year-old woman named Asia Kinsey was arrested and charged with terroristic threats and acts for making a threatening social media post related to the investigation.
