In the late summer evening of August 29, 2021, a dispute over a basketball game bet in Toccoa, Georgia, escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of 30-year-old Christopher Deshun Tukes, an African American male. The argument, which took place at Whitman Street Park, led to gunfire, forever altering the lives of two families and sending ripples through the small community. Tukes was shot twice in the back with an AR-15 as he tried to run away and later succumbed to his injuries at Stephens County Hospital. Another man, 34-year-old Scottae Martin, was also wounded in the shooting but survived after being treated at a local medical center.
In the immediate aftermath, law enforcement, including the Toccoa Police Department and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, launched a search for the suspected shooter, 32-year-old Brodrique Simone Dixon of Toccoa. A murder warrant was issued for his arrest. However, the search was short-lived as Dixon turned himself in to the Toccoa Police Department on the Tuesday following the shooting. He was subsequently booked into the Stephens County jail.
Initially, Dixon faced serious charges of malice murder and felony murder. In December 2021, a grand jury indicted him on these counts, as well as two counts of aggravated assault and two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. However, as the case proceeded to trial, the charges were amended to voluntary manslaughter.
The trial concluded in June 2023, with a Stephens County jury finding Brodrique Dixon guilty of voluntary manslaughter. During the sentencing hearing, the court heard emotional statements from the families and friends of both Tukes and Dixon. The prosecution highlighted that Dixon had shot an unarmed Tukes in the back as he fled. While acknowledging Dixon's lack of a prior criminal history, the judge sentenced him to the maximum allowable term of 20 years in prison, emphasizing the serious nature of the crime.
