In the early morning hours of March 5, 2024, a distressing 911 call from a residence on Ruby Street in Toccoa, Georgia, set in motion a tragic series of events. The call was unusual; the line remained open, but no one spoke directly to the dispatcher, though voices in the background hinted at a physical confrontation, with one person mentioning someone had been struck.
When Toccoa Police Department officers arrived at the scene around 4:50 a.m., they found 33-year-old Ieshia Chantavia Thornton and 33-year-old Christopher Howell sitting in a vehicle in the driveway.
Upon entering the home, officers discovered the unresponsive body of 51-year-old Eric King, a Black / African American male. King had sustained a fatal gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation that followed, with assistance from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, quickly pointed to a domestic dispute as the catalyst for the deadly encounter. Investigators determined that Thornton and King were in a relationship and shared a child. Howell was identified as a witness to the incident.
Following their initial investigation, authorities arrested Ieshia Chantavia Thornton and charged her with malice murder. She was subsequently booked into the Stephens County Jail. Police officials confirmed that the firearm used in the shooting had been recovered and that there was no further danger to the public. While King resided at the Ruby Street address, it was noted that Thornton did not live there, and there were no prior domestic violence calls to that location. The case remains under investigation by the Toccoa Police Department and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
