In the early evening of November 23, 2021, a burst of violence on North Gamble Road in Savannah, Georgia, shattered the night and claimed the life of Markese De'Shawn Singleton. The 29-year-old male, a resident of St. Helena Island, South Carolina, was discovered inside a vehicle with another man from the Bluffton area, both suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency services were called to the 100 block of the street at approximately 7 p.m., where they found the two victims. While the other man was transported to a hospital with serious injuries, Singleton succumbed to his wounds.

The Savannah Police Department's Violent Crimes detectives immediately launched an investigation into the double shooting. The initial stages of the inquiry focused on processing the scene and appealing to the public for any information that could lead to the identification of those responsible for the fatal shooting. Detectives worked to piece together the circumstances that led to the violent encounter which ended in one man's death and another's serious injury.

Within a few weeks, the investigation led authorities to a suspect. On December 8, 2021, 33-year-old Joseph Miller was apprehended by U.S. Marshals in Louisiana in connection with the shooting. Miller was subsequently charged with murder and aggravated assault for his alleged role in the death of Markese Singleton and the wounding of the second victim. Following his arrest, he was held for extradition to face the charges against him in Georgia.
