On December 16, 2021, the body of a 30-year-old Black/African American female, Jamesha Trammell, was discovered in the woods near an entrance to Anderson Park in northwest Atlanta, Georgia. She had been fatally shot and left near a trail just two weeks after her thirtieth birthday. A mother of three, Trammell was known by her loved ones as a joyful and sweet person who worked tirelessly to provide for her children, at times holding down three jobs.
Originally from Rome, Georgia, Trammell
had recently moved to Atlanta with aspirations of creating a better life and providing better educational opportunities for her three young children. Her family described her as a loving mother, sister, and daughter who loved to sing and make others laugh. They believe that in her quest for a fresh start, she tragically crossed paths with the wrong person. While a definitive motive has not been released by law enforcement, it was reported that Trammell had been in an argument with a man concerning a PlayStation console shortly before her death.
The Atlanta Police Department’s homicide unit dedicated significant resources to the case, spending approximately 200 hours on the investigation which they described as having "rocked us to our core." Their efforts led them to identify 25-year-old Wallace Jerome Ponder as the primary suspect. An arrest warrant was secured for Ponder on January 18, 2022, charging him with murder.
Just two days later, on January 20, 2022, investigators with the Atlanta Police Department's Fugitive Unit located and apprehended Wallace Ponder in Gwinnett County. Following his arrest, he was transported to the Fulton County Jail, where he was held without bond. The arrest brought a measure of relief to Trammell's grieving family, who had been actively seeking justice and answers in the painful month following her murder. Her mother expressed both profound grief and a determination to see the judicial process through, stating that she would not let the person responsible get away with their actions.
