In the summer of 1999, the life of 27-year-old Leigh Ann Vandiver Barton, a white female, came to a brutal and tragic end in her suburban Atlanta, Georgia, apartment. On July 27th, while she slept, her husband, Mark Orrin Barton, bludgeoned her to death with a hammer. He then concealed her body in a closet. The following night, Mark Barton also murdered his two children from a previous marriage, 11-year-old Matthew and 7-year-old Mychelle, in the same horrific manner.
He tucked their bodies into their beds, placing their favorite toys beside them.
Mark Barton, a day trader who had recently suffered significant financial losses, left behind a series of disturbing notes. In these writings, he confessed to the murders of his wife and children. He claimed he killed Leigh Ann because she was 'one of the main reasons for his demise' but also expressed a twisted sense of love and regret. He stated he killed the children to spare them a lifetime of pain. Barton also referenced the unsolved 1993 bludgeoning deaths of his first wife, Debra Spivey, and her mother, Eloise Spivey, in Alabama. While he was the primary suspect in that case, he denied his involvement in his final notes.
After murdering his family, Mark Barton's rampage continued. On July 29th, he went to two day-trading firms in Atlanta, Momentum Securities and the All-Tech Investment Group, and opened fire, killing nine people and injuring thirteen others. This act of mass violence sparked a massive manhunt. The search for Barton ended hours later at a gas station in Acworth, Georgia. As police closed in, Mark Barton took his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The investigation into Leigh Ann Vandiver Barton's death, along with the murders of her stepchildren and the victims of the office shootings, concluded with the death of the sole perpetrator, Mark Orrin Barton. Consequently, no arrests were made, and there was no trial.
