On a Friday evening in Atlanta, Georgia, on May 22, 2020, the life of 35-year-old Shadeeah Melton was tragically cut short. In the 100 block of Fairburn Road, what began as an argument escalated into a violent encounter that left two women shot multiple times. Both Shadeeah and her sister, Fatima Jefferson, were rushed to a local hospital. While her sister was in critical condition, Shadeeah succumbed to her injuries.
Witnesses at the scene reported seeing a black SUV speeding away after the gunshots rang out.
Raised in Dayton, Ohio, Shadeeah was remembered as a bright and gifted individual. She had been a star basketball player in high school and went on to earn a communications degree from Jesuit University. Her career was one of service, having worked at Children's Hospital in Cincinnati before relocating to Atlanta, where she was employed by a number of hospitals. Her sister, Aisha Jefferson, described her as intelligent, bright, and giving.
The investigation into Shadeeah's death moved swiftly. Investigators identified two suspects, 41-year-old Antonio Lamar Martin of Atlanta and 29-year-old Samantha Ariel Gardner of Powder Springs. The pair turned themselves in to authorities and were subsequently arrested on murder charges. In addition to the murder charge, both Martin and Gardner faced a count of aggravated assault. Gardner was also charged with firearm possession, while Martin, a convicted felon, faced an additional charge for possessing a firearm. Both were held in the Fulton County Jail without bond.
