David Brown, a 43-year-old Black man from Columbus, Georgia, was shot before dawn on Palm Sunday, April 10, 2022, outside his apartment complex at 714 Fort Benning Road near the roundabout. The shooting happened at about 4 a.m., and what began as another violent moment in the dark turned into a fight for his life that lasted into the next day. Brown was taken to Piedmont Columbus Regional, where he underwent surgery, but he was pronounced dead at 5 p.m. on April 11.

The case moved quickly once homicide detectives focused on a suspect. Columbus police announced that Donnell Russell had been arrested on April 19, 2022, in connection with Brown’s killing, after investigators obtained a murder warrant and carried it out with help from the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office Sex Offender Task Force.
