Multiple gunshots were then heard outside the family's residence on Beaver Run Road. By the time Haralson County Sheriff's deputies arrived and made entry into the home, it was too late. They discovered both Christa and her estranged husband, 36-year-old Johnny Franklin Brown II, unresponsive inside.

Authorities concluded that Johnny Brown shot and killed his estranged wife before turning the gun on himself in a murder-suicide. The incident left their four children orphaned.
