In the Yamacraw neighborhood of Savannah, Georgia, a 14-year-old African-American girl named Delia Green attended a Christmas Eve party in 1900 at the home of her employers, Willie and Emma West. Also present was 15-year-old Moses “Cooney” Houston, who had been courting Delia for a few months. The festive atmosphere took a dark turn when a drunken Houston began to argue with Delia, publicly claiming her in a way that she strongly refuted.
