In a tragic turn of events on a Sunday morning in July 2015, 39-year-old Jamie Sandefur lost her life in Cairo, Georgia. The incident, which authorities have described as an apparent murder-suicide, unfolded at a residence on Jordon Road in Grady County. It was there that Jamie was shot by her 55-year-old husband, George Sandefur.
Family members reported the shooting, and first responders transported Jamie to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, but she ultimately succumbed to her injuries. The weapon used in the fatal shooting was identified as an assault-style rifle. Following the shooting, George Sandefur fled the scene.
Later, deputies from the Decatur County Sheriff's Office located George Sandefur at a different address on Hines Perkins Road in Whigham. There, he was discovered with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was taken to Archbold Memorial Hospital in Thomasville, where he also died.
Investigations into the incident revealed a history of domestic trouble. George Sandefur had been arrested just a month prior, on June 28, 2015, for simple battery-family violence and terroristic threats, with his wife, Jamie, being the victim in that case as well. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was involved in the investigation of the shootings in both Grady and Decatur counties.
