In the summer of 2024, the community of Cairo, Georgia, was shaken by the tragic death of Heather Renee Haywood, a 41-year-old female. On the morning of July 30, her life was cut short in a violent act that also claimed the life of 35-year-old James Lamar Sherman.
The incident unfolded near Azalea Park, where law enforcement officers responded to a 911 call from a nearby residence in the early hours of the morning. Upon their arrival, they discovered Sherman with gunshot wounds at the residence. Haywood's body was found in the adjacent park. Both victims were transported to a local hospital, but succumbed to their injuries.
Heather Haywood, born on June 2, 1983, in Mansfield, Ohio, was a licensed practical nurse known for her compassionate and caring nature. She was a mother to three children and a new grandmother. Her family and friends remember her as a sweet person who was deeply devoted to her children.
Months after the double homicide, in December 2024, the Cairo Police Department announced the arrests of two men in connection with the deaths of Haywood and Sherman. William Phillip Mosely, 40, and Willie Cooper, 38, were taken into custody and both face two counts of malice murder.
