In what was meant to be a joyous celebration of a milestone, a graduation party in Marietta, Georgia, turned into a scene of chaos and tragedy, ending the life of 17-year-old Grayson Green on the night of May 21, 2022. The male teenager was attending a large gathering at the Walton Village apartment complex when gunfire erupted, sending attendees fleeing and leaving Green with a fatal gunshot wound to his chest. First responders attempted to render aid, but he was pronounced deceased at WellStar Kennestone Hospital.
The party had reportedly started at an Airbnb outside the city limits but was shut down by the homeowner. Subsequently, the gathering of approximately 200 teenagers and young adults moved to the apartment complex on Roberta Drive, with the new location being advertised on social media. It was there, near the entrance of the gated community, that the shooting occurred around 10 p.m., cutting short the life of a high school junior with a passion for music production.
For over a year, the case remained a focal point for the Marietta Police Department, who urged witnesses to come forward, with a reward of up to $10,000 being offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction. The investigation eventually led to the identification of three suspects. In May 2023, authorities announced the arrests of twin siblings, 17-year-old Ne'riyah and Ne'cquo Vargas, who were apprehended in Newport News, Virginia. The third suspect, 21-year-old Tahkel Beverly Smart, was already in custody in Douglas County on unrelated charges.
All three individuals face a string of serious felony charges, including malice murder, felony murder, and aggravated assault. Furthermore, each of these charges is accompanied by a violation of the Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act. Smart was later transferred to the Cobb County Adult Detention Center, where he and the Vargas twins are being held without bond. The investigation into the full scope of their activities remains ongoing.
