On an autumn day in Atlanta, the life of 22-year-old Nathaniel Johnson was tragically cut short. On October 1, 2022, at a Motel 6 on Virginia Avenue in East Point, a dispute escalated into fatal violence. Witnesses later recounted to police that they saw Johnson in a physical altercation with another man just moments before the sound of gunfire echoed through the hallway.
When authorities arrived, they found Nathaniel Johnson unresponsive.
For weeks, the case remained under investigation as authorities worked to identify a suspect in the senseless killing. Then, on October 29, 2022, a breakthrough came. Officers with the Atlanta Police Department, acting on information that a murder suspect's vehicle was in the area, spotted a 2010 Ford Crown Victoria near Fairburn Road SW. As they attempted to initiate a traffic stop, the driver, later identified as Jadarius Carr, abandoned the car at a gas station and fled on foot. A brief chase ensued through a nearby playground before Carr was apprehended.
Jadarius Carr, a 24-year-old man, was taken into custody and subsequently faced a litany of 18 charges. These included two counts of murder for separate incidents, one of which was the death of Nathaniel Johnson. The second murder charge stemmed from the shooting of Clinton Odu on October 2, 2022, at an apartment complex on Steele Avenue. In addition to the murder charges, Carr's indictment included three counts of aggravated assault in both DeKalb and Fulton counties, four counts of possession of a weapon during the commission of a felony, obstruction of law enforcement, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, highlighting a history of violent crime. Body camera footage of his arrest captured the dramatic conclusion to the manhunt for the man police described as a 'dangerous suspect' and 'repeat offender.' Following his arrest, Carr was booked into the Fulton County jail.
