On a tragic day in Macon, Georgia, 41-year-old George Nicholas Brooks, an African American male, lost his life in a brutal home invasion. The harrowing events unfolded on November 3, 2022, at a residence on Morris Avenue. Responding to a call of a person shot shortly before 1:30 a.m., Bibb County sheriff's deputies discovered a grim scene. Inside the home, they found Brooks in a bathroom, unconscious with a gunshot wound to his shoulder. Another victim, 61-year-old Milton Jolly, was found shot in the bushes outside the residence. Both men were rushed to a local hospital, but their injuries proved fatal, and they were pronounced dead.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly pointed to one individual, 30-year-old Deon Hy Darre Banks. According to reports, Banks had forcibly entered the home and held four occupants at gunpoint. His motive appeared to be a dispute over a stolen gun, for which he was demanding payment. The situation escalated horrifically as Banks sexually assaulted a woman in the house, forcing Jolly to witness the act, and pistol-whipped another individual. When Jolly attempted to flee, Banks shot him. He then turned his weapon on Brooks. The violent rampage was brought to an end when Banks fled the scene.
Thanks to a tip, Bibb County patrol deputies located and arrested Banks later the same day at a gas station. He was taken into custody without incident. The evidence against him included shell casings found at his arrest that matched those at the crime scene, as well as a gun. Banks was subsequently charged with a litany of offenses, including two counts of murder, rape, aggravated sodomy, false imprisonment, four counts of aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
Deon Banks was held without bond at the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center as he awaited trial. The case, described by prosecutors as 'one of the most heinous crimes in recent memory,' concluded with his conviction on all charges. For his brutal actions that resulted in the deaths of George Brooks and Milton Jolly, and the trauma inflicted on the survivors, Banks received three consecutive life sentences plus an additional five years, ensuring he will spend the remainder of his life behind bars.
