Lois Marie Marrero, a 40-year-old Hispanic female, was a dedicated officer with the Tampa Police Department. On July 6, 2001, she tragically lost her life in the line of duty. Marrero was pursuing a bank robbery suspect on foot when she was ambushed and fatally shot. The suspect, Nestor DeJesus, had just robbed a bank and fled into an apartment complex. As Officer Marrero approached, DeJesus, who was hiding behind a car, opened fire, striking her multiple times.
Despite immediate medical attention, Marrero succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
The incident did not end with Marrero's death. DeJesus continued his violent spree by taking hostages in a nearby apartment. After a tense standoff with law enforcement, he ultimately took his own life. This tragic event left the Tampa community in mourning and highlighted the dangers faced by police officers daily.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Paula Gutierrez, DeJesus's accomplice and girlfriend, was arrested and charged with several crimes, including first-degree felony murder. During her trial, Gutierrez's defense portrayed her as a victim of domestic abuse, manipulated and controlled by DeJesus. However, the prosecution argued that she was fully aware of the criminal activities and played an active role in the robbery and subsequent events. In June 2003, Gutierrez was convicted and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Officer Marrero's death had a profound impact on her colleagues and the community. She was remembered as a dedicated and courageous officer who served with distinction for 19 years. Her partner, Mickie Mashburn, also a Tampa detective, expressed deep sorrow and loss, stating that Marrero had been looking forward to retirement and had plans to attend law school. The Tampa Police Department and the broader community continue to honor her memory and sacrifice.
