The couple was found dead in their home on Winners Circle by a family member on January 1, 2018.

Family members reported that William's medical condition had been causing significant behavioral changes, including increased anger and aggression. There were no arrests or suspects in this case, as the perpetrator, William Rust, also died in the incident. Consequently, there were no litigations or law cases directly related to the deaths of Gretchen and William Rust. The case was closed following the confirmation of the murder-suicide by the Medical Examiner’s Office and the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office.
