Fridelène Daniel, a 34-year-old woman from Boynton Beach, Florida, tragically lost her life on November 8, 2023, in a horrific incident of domestic violence. Earlier that morning, Daniel had visited the Boynton Beach police station to file a complaint against her ex-boyfriend, Robens Cesar, whom she feared was stalking and harassing her. She arrived at the police station around 8:15 a.m. and spoke with Officer Jermaine Jones, expressing her deep fear for her life and informing him that Cesar had a gun.
During the interaction, which was captured on bodycam, Daniel emphasized her fear, stating, "I want, when I move in there, I don’t want him behind me because he has a (gun). I don’t want you make me die." Despite her pleas, Officer Jones did not conduct a thorough investigation to determine if there was probable cause for stalking, nor did he follow the proper domestic violence protocols. Jones allowed Cesar to leave the station just minutes after Daniel had departed.
Tragically, less than 20 minutes later, shortly before 9 a.m., the Boynton Beach Police Department was alerted to a shooting in the parking lot of Daniel's building. Robens Cesar had shot and killed Daniel, later confessing to the crime and stating that her visit to the police that morning was "the final straw." Cesar, 41, was subsequently charged with first-degree murder with a firearm.
The incident led to an Internal Affairs investigation, which resulted in Officer Jermaine Jones being suspended for two weeks without pay. Jones was also required to undergo 120 hours of additional training, including domestic violence training. The investigation highlighted several shortcomings in Jones' handling of the situation, including inaccurate statements during his interview and a failure to adhere to the department's core values and protocols.
