Rebecca Ann Wetherell Aldridge, aged 30, tragically lost her life on March 18, 2019, in what was determined to be a murder-suicide in Ocala, Florida. On that fateful evening, Rebecca returned to her home on Southwest 15th Street Road with her uncle, intending to change the locks. Upon entering the house, she encountered her estranged husband, Shawn Aldridge, who had been waiting inside. An argument ensued, during which Shawn shot Rebecca twice in the head before turning the gun on himself.
The incident was witnessed indirectly by Rebecca's uncle, who heard the gunshots from outside and immediately called 911.
The Marion County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene, but initial attempts to make contact with the occupants were unsuccessful. The SWAT team was subsequently deployed and, upon entering the residence, discovered the bodies of Rebecca and Shawn Aldridge. The investigation revealed that the couple had been separated, and Rebecca had been trying to leave an abusive relationship. Family members reported that Rebecca had suffered emotional abuse, although there were no prior indications that Shawn intended to harm her.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, Rebecca's family established RAWlove Ministries Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting individuals affected by domestic abuse. The organization aims to provide spiritual growth and assistance to those in similar situations. Rebecca was remembered as a kind and giving person, deeply involved in her community and church. She had recently begun studying to become a Christian counselor and was known for her volunteer work with domestic violence victims.
The investigation into the murder-suicide did not result in any arrests, as the perpetrator, Shawn Aldridge, had taken his own life. The case highlighted the pervasive issue of domestic violence and its devastating consequences. Rebecca's death was one of the first domestic violence-related homicides in Marion County that year, underscoring the need for increased awareness and support for victims of such abuse.
