Benetria Leshae Robinson, a 19-year-old African American woman from Ocala, Florida, tragically lost her life on September 13, 2015, as a result of gunshot wounds sustained during a shooting at the Cloud 9 nightclub. Benetria, who had recently graduated from Forest High School and was attending Palm Beach State College on a basketball scholarship, was known for her academic excellence and athletic prowess. She was an aspiring homicide detective, studying criminal justice, and was home for the weekend to support a cousin in a local sports event.

On the night of her death, Benetria decided to visit the nightclub with her fiancé, Johnick Wright. An altercation inside the club escalated, leading to a shooting outside the venue. Benetria was struck by bullets in her head and shoulder, and she died at the scene. The incident also resulted in injuries to five other individuals. The shooting was described as a senseless act of violence, deeply affecting her family and the community.

In the aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement quickly identified and arrested suspects involved in the incident. Laquan Barrow and Michael Eugene Smith were convicted of second-degree murder and multiple counts of attempted second-degree murder for their roles in the shooting. A third suspect, Gary Edward King, awaited a verdict at the time. The prosecution argued that the altercation inside the club spilled into the parking lot, where the defendants escalated the conflict by brandishing firearms and firing 21 bullets within a span of about five seconds. Ballistics experts traced the shell casings to three separate weapons.

During the trial, witnesses provided testimony, although some were reluctant to cooperate fully. One witness was sentenced to six months in jail for contempt after refusing to testify truthfully. Despite these challenges, the jury found Barrow and Smith guilty, and Smith was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Benetria Robinson. The case highlighted the devastating impact of gun violence and the importance of justice for the victims and their families.
