The incident occurred in the early hours of Christmas Day when Preston Pollard, a 23-year-old recent graduate of Air Force basic training, drove over 1,000 miles from Venus, Texas, to the Hutson residence in Marion Oaks, Florida. Pollard's motive was reportedly driven by a desire to confront his ex-girlfriend's family after learning that she would not be spending the holidays with him.
Upon arrival, Pollard opened fire, fatally shooting Richard Hutson and critically wounding his wife, Mary Lou Hutson, 55, who later succumbed to her injuries after a prolonged battle in the hospital.
The tragic event unfolded when Pollard, armed with a gun, arrived at the Hutson home just after midnight. Mary Lou Hutson answered the door and was immediately shot multiple times.
