The incident occurred in front of the Ocala Police Department headquarters, where she had driven to seek help from her estranged husband, Jose R. Vazquez. The couple had been involved in an ongoing dispute, and on that fateful day, the argument escalated dramatically.
As Debra attempted to drive away from her husband, he pursued her in his pickup truck, ramming her car in an attempt to force her to stop. In a desperate bid for safety, Debra drove to the police station, but unfortunately, it was unmanned at the time due to the holiday weekend.
Upon arrival at the police station, the argument between Debra and Jose turned physical. Witnesses reported seeing Jose with a shotgun, which he used to shoot Debra. Despite attempts by bystanders to intervene, Jose managed to flee the scene. He later drove to the home of a friend, where he retrieved ammunition and confessed to the shooting. Jose then drove to a nearby location and took his own life with the same shotgun he used to kill Debra. The couple's 8-month-old grandchild was present in Debra's car during the incident but was unharmed.
