In the crisp autumn air of a Monday evening in October 2015, the life of 21-year-old Damien Jamal Best was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence in Northeast Baltimore. A Black male, Best was standing outside his home in the 5400 block of Moores Run Drive when he was ambushed by a gunman. The sound of gunshots pierced the night, and Damien fell, gravely wounded. In a display of chilling callousness, multiple hooded figures then descended upon him, robbing him as he lay dying. The horrific scene was partially witnessed by his own mother, who saw the end of the brutal attack on her son.
Police and paramedics arrived at the scene around 10 p.m. to find Damien suffering from gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved too severe, and he was pronounced dead. The initial investigation by the Baltimore City Police Department classified his death as a homicide, marking another grim statistic in the city's rising tide of violence that year.
Just a few days later, the grief of Damien's loved ones was compounded by further violence. On the following Thursday night, a crowd of about 100 people gathered on Moores Run Drive for a candlelight vigil to honor his memory and plead for an end to the bloodshed. Tragically, the peaceful gathering was shattered when gunfire erupted once again. A 26-year-old man was shot multiple times during the vigil, adding another layer of trauma to an already devastated community. Fortunately, he was expected to survive his injuries.
Despite the public nature of the initial shooting and the subsequent violence at the vigil, information regarding any suspects or arrests in the murder of Damien Best has not been publicly released. The investigation into his death was handled by detectives from the Northeast District, who appealed to the public for any information that could lead to the capture of those responsible.
