Dishawn Reynolds, aged 41, tragically lost his life on June 20, 2020, in Palm Beach Gardens, FL. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning outside an apartment complex on North Congress Avenue in Riviera Beach. Reynolds had been out with his girlfriend, Tina Gilmore, and they returned to the complex around 1:15 a.m. After saying their goodbyes, a hooded man approached Reynolds and opened fire, shooting him multiple times. Despite Gilmore's efforts to rush him to JFK Hospital North in West Palm Beach, Reynolds succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation revealed that the shooter was Terrance Bythwood, Gilmore's estranged husband. Bythwood had been attempting to rekindle his marriage with Gilmore after his numerous affairs had driven her away. When his efforts failed, he resorted to violence. Bythwood was arrested and charged with the murder of Dishawn Reynolds. However, on the eve of his trial, he pleaded guilty to manslaughter instead of murder. This plea deal was reached after two key witnesses recanted their statements and a third fled the state. Bythwood was sentenced to 15 years in prison and an additional 10 years of probation.
In addition to the criminal case, there was also a civil lawsuit filed against the owners and managers of the apartment complex where the shooting occurred. The lawsuit alleged that the complex failed to implement necessary security measures that could have prevented Reynolds' death. The front gates of the complex were broken, and there were no security guards patrolling at the time of the shooting. The case was settled for $4 million just days before the trial was set to begin.
