Capt. James M. Gilliard, a 48-year-old fire-rescue captain from Palm Beach Gardens, FL, tragically died on November 2, 2020. His death occurred under suspicious circumstances involving his friend, Jay B. Rind. According to reports, Gilliard was fatally shot by Rind while the latter was showing him a gun he intended to give him. Rind claimed the shooting was accidental, stating that the gun discharged while he was demonstrating it to Gilliard. However, the incident quickly drew the attention of law enforcement due to the peculiar nature of the events leading up to the shooting.
Investigations revealed that Gilliard and Rind were involved in an ongoing conspiracy to buy and sell prescription drugs. Court records indicated that the two men had exchanged numerous messages discussing drug transactions. On the night of the shooting, it was alleged that the meeting between Gilliard and Rind was actually a drug transaction, with the gun being part of the deal. This revelation added a layer of complexity to the case, as it suggested that the shooting might not have been purely accidental.
Rind was subsequently charged with third-degree felony murder and improper exhibition of a firearm. Additional charges included trafficking in morphine, conspiracy to sell oxycodone, conspiracy to sell amphetamines, and conspiracy to sell morphine. The investigation uncovered that Rind had been involved in distributing narcotics, which he either received through prescriptions or brought back from trips to Mexico. The autopsy report on Gilliard showed the presence of amphetamines and oxycodone at levels outside therapeutic ranges, along with traces of Xanax and morphine.
As the case progressed, Rind's legal troubles deepened. He was initially charged with manslaughter, but prosecutors later upgraded the charge to murder. Despite the serious charges, Rind was released on a $20,000 bond shortly after his arrest. The case took another turn when Rind died in August 2022, leading prosecutors to drop the charges against him.
