Mathew D. Stringer, a 21-year-old Black male, was tragically killed on April 13, 2021, in Hialeah Gardens, Florida. The incident occurred around 2:20 PM at a bus stop outside a Home Depot near Northwest 138th Street and W. Okeechobee Road. Mathew, along with two coworkers, was waiting for a bus when a man approached them and opened fire. Mathew was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other two victims, aged 38 and 66, were critically injured and transported to local hospitals.
The
suspect, identified as 40-year-old Roland Deus Day, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and two counts of premeditated attempted murder. According to the arrest report, Day confessed to the shooting, stating that he believed his coworkers were stealing his marijuana and had laughed at him. Surveillance footage from the Home Depot and the bus stop, along with shell casings matching Day's .40 caliber handgun, provided crucial evidence leading to his arrest.
The investigation revealed that Day, who worked with the victims at Tremron, a manufacturer of brick pavers and hardscape products, drove to the bus stop in his gray Dodge Neon and approached the victims from behind before opening fire. The Miami-Dade Police Department continues to seek information from the public to aid in the ongoing investigation.
