Sherman Knight, a 20-year-old from Pensacola, Florida, tragically lost his life on February 10, 2022, during a violent altercation. Knight, along with his friends Dominic Burleson and Jamaine Flowers, had planned an ambush to kill Derrick Daniels at the intersection of Bobe and G streets. The three men approached Daniels and initiated gunfire. However, Daniels, acting in self-defense, returned fire, and one of his shots struck Knight in the chest. Knight was subsequently transported to Baptist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into Knight's death revealed that the ambush was premeditated. Video surveillance from a nearby convenience store captured Burleson, Flowers, and Knight entering a field together and approaching Daniels. The footage showed that the trio fired the first shots. Despite neither Burleson nor Flowers firing the fatal shot, Florida law allows for felony murder charges when a death occurs during the commission of a felony. Consequently, both Burleson and Flowers were charged with second-degree felony murder and attempted first-degree premeditated murder.
In the legal proceedings that followed, both Burleson and Flowers pleaded no contest to the charges. Their plea agreements reduced their potential life sentences to 20 years in prison. The court acknowledged that Knight's death was a direct result of the criminal actions undertaken by all three men during the ambush. Both Burleson and Flowers received credit for time served in the Escambia County Jail, amounting to 697 days.
