Floyd Douglas Heist Sr., a 42-year-old white male, tragically lost his life on May 3, 1980, in Pensacola, Florida. He was serving as a Deputy Sheriff with the Escambia County Sheriff's Office at the time of his death. On that fateful day, Deputy Heist responded to an armed robbery at a local business. As the first officer on the scene, he entered the establishment before the robbery was confirmed. Upon his arrival, the suspect, a 21-year-old male, took a hostage.
Deputy Heist attempted to negotiate the release of the hostage, but during the negotiation, the suspect suddenly shot him, resulting in his death.
The suspect was subsequently arrested and charged with the murder of Deputy Heist. He was convicted and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. As of November 25, 2020, the suspect remained incarcerated. Deputy Heist's death was a significant loss to the community and the Escambia County Sheriff's Office, where he had served for over nine years. He is survived by his wife, three sons, and two daughters.
