Jacoby "Shad" Young, a 32-year-old resident of Pensacola, Florida, was fatally shot on July 8, 2023, at the Moorings Apartments located on Old Spanish Trail and Olive roads. The incident occurred around 8:50 p.m. when a shooting took place, and upon arrival, Escambia County deputies found Young shot dead.
According to Sheriff Chip Simmons of the Escambia County Sheriff's Office, the shooting was not random.
It is believed that Young was involved in a disagreement with two black males at the apartment he shared with his girlfriend. The altercation escalated to gunfire, resulting in Young's death. The suspects fled the scene, and as of the latest reports, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been identified by the authorities.
Young was described by those who knew him as strong-willed and passionate about football and his family. He was a member of the Greater Pensacola Jets, a pro-minor league football team, and was coached and mentored by Fred Barnett for eight years. Barnett remembered Young as a good man who was always present at community events and was deeply involved in helping out with various activities, including park cleanups, fundraisers, and youth football camps.
The investigation into Young's death is ongoing, with the sheriff's office working to piece together the events surrounding the shooting. Young's family held a vigil to celebrate his life, reflecting on his contributions to the community and his impact on those who knew him.
The incident has raised questions about the security measures at the apartment complex, with some speculating whether negligent security might have contributed to the shooting. However, these aspects are still under investigation and legal analysis.
