Jorge Romero-Gil, a 67-year-old resident of Coral Gables, Florida, tragically lost his life on July 22, 2022, in a violent incident that has left the community in shock. Romero-Gil was fatally shot near the 10 Aragon Condominium building, where he was working a maintenance job. According to witnesses, he was picking up trash near the condo building's loading dock when a vehicle pulled up, and an argument ensued.
The initial investigation revealed that two teenagers, 18-year-old Gary Ragin and a 17-year-old minor, exited the vehicle and approached Romero-Gil. Ragin pointed a Glock handgun at Romero-Gil and demanded his property. Despite complying with their demands and handing over an envelope containing cash, the 17-year-old grabbed the gun from Ragin and shot Romero-Gil in the chest, subsequently stealing his wallet as he lay dying.
The suspects fled the scene in a stolen Dodge Caliber, leading to a police pursuit. A Coral Gables police officer spotted the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop, but the suspects refused to comply, resulting in a chase. The vehicle eventually crashed at Tigertail Avenue and Darwin Street, and the suspects fled on foot. A perimeter was established, and both suspects were apprehended shortly after. The suspects, identified as Gary Ragin and Jermaine Walker, were charged with first-degree murder and armed grand theft auto. Prosecutors are seeking to charge Walker, the minor, as an adult for his involvement in the murder.
