Dennis Gibson, aged 30, was tragically murdered on November 19, 1981, near Yermo, California. His body was discovered in the rugged desert terrain of Odessa Canyon, west of Calico Ghost Town. The area was not easily accessible, making the discovery of his body by two hikers particularly significant. Gibson had been shot four times and bludgeoned to death, with .22 caliber fired cartridge casings and a black wooden tire knocker found at the crime scene. It took three years to positively identify his body, during which time his family had no knowledge of his whereabouts. Prior to his death, Gibson had informed his sister of his plans to tour the west coast and surf in Baja, California, but he never made contact again.
The investigation into Gibson's murder initially ran cold, with detectives exhausting all leads. However, a breakthrough came in 2005 when a ballistics report linked the .22-caliber Ruger used in Gibson's murder to another crime.
This gun was also used in the 1982 murder of James Wilson in Reno, Nevada, and the October 1981 murder of Melanie Barker in Washington. The suspect, Tracy Petrocelli, was already on death row in Nevada for Wilson's murder. Petrocelli, a resident of Del Mar, California, had met Gibson while the latter was on vacation surfing in the area. Petrocelli was found in possession of Gibson's birth certificate and driver's license when he was arrested by the Las Vegas Police Department in April 1982.
In a significant development, Petrocelli accepted a plea bargain in 2009, pleading no contest to second-degree murder charges in Gibson's case. He was sentenced to 15 years to life for the murder. As part of the plea agreement, Petrocelli waived his appeal rights. This resolution provided some closure for Gibson's family, who had waited decades for answers about his death. Petrocelli is currently being held at the West Valley Detention Center and is expected to be transferred back to Nevada's death row. Given his existing death penalty in Nevada and additional charges in Washington, it is unlikely that Petrocelli will serve time in a California prison.
